Most airport counters freeze the rental total plus a $200–$500 deposit on a debit card — or turn it down. We show you which companies accept debit cards, how big the hold typically is, and the suppliers that can waive the deposit when you add coverage, at 40 major U.S. airports.
See the debit-card guide →Debit Car Rental is a free, independent directory of debit-card and low-deposit car rentals at 40 major U.S. airports. For each airport we list which rental companies accept a debit card, how big the typical security-deposit hold is, whether they run a credit check or ask for proof of return travel, and how to find a low- or no-deposit option before you fly — so you're not stranded at the counter. We don't take bookings; we point you to the right supplier and let you reserve directly.
Each guide lists which brands take a debit card there, the typical deposit hold, and any low- or no-deposit options.
On a credit card a hold just lowers your limit. On a debit card the rental company freezes real money in your checking account — often the rental total plus $200–$500.
Airport counters need a card to place that hold. Showing up with cash only usually means no car. The fix is to book a debit-friendly supplier in advance.
No-deposit brands replace the hold with an insurance / excess-waiver package. Risk covered by the policy means nothing frozen on your account.
